How to reach the Aeolian Islands

There are different ways to get to the Aeolian Islands:

By car

Drive along the Salerno/Reggio Calabria motorway, cross the Strait of Messina and take the Caronte ferry to Messina or Milazzo, park your car in a private garage (there are some that offer excellent weekly prices), then take the first ferry or hydrofoil to the Aeolian Islands, which runs all day long with the Siremar and Ustica lines. If you don't like to drive to Villa San Giovanni you can stop in Salerno, from there take a ferry with the possibility to embark your car, the Caronte line makes the transfer every day except Monday.

By ferry
It leaves on Friday and Saturday evening from Naples and arrives in the Aeolian Islands the following day in the morning. siremar timetable 2020The shipping company is Siremar.
By hydrofoil
faster but also more expensive, with the Snav company It leaves every day from Naples Mergellina at about 14:00 and in summer it makes a second run in the morning and arrives at the islands in the evening;
By plane
flying to Reggio Calabria then take the hydrofoil from Reggio that makes a stop in Messina (check the efficiency of the service before booking the plane as the Calabria region some years has suspended the service).
-flyingto Catania then take a bus to Milazzo (to book on the internet with the company Alibrando, with the possibility of booking the ticket of 'hydrofoil to Lipari in advance) from there hydrofoil to the Aeolian Islands
Flyingto Palermo and then by hydrofoil to the islands (the hydrofoil service from Palermo to the islands makes a few trips should be carefully checked for connections).

It all seems a bit complicated but I assure you that it is much more difficult to tell than to do, certainly the solution from Naples with the hydrofoil and the aerial solution on Catania are the simplest but also the most popular.
